Facebook pumps the brakes on its secondary News Feed, 'Explore'

News Feed FYI Ending the Explore Feed Test

The split feed was created to separate one's social life from the Pages they follow, moving posts from Pages into a News Feed that was separate from a feed containing statuses from friends and family.

The Explore Feed experiment only ran in Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Bolivia, Cambodia, Serbia and Slovakia, and it was also made available as an option to Facebook users in the US.

In a statement to the Guardian, Facebook said: "People have told us they want an easier way to see posts from friends and family, so we are testing two separate feeds, one as a dedicated space with posts from friends and family and another as a dedicated space for posts from Pages".

The company has previously been criticized for conducting experiments with the site that has become a major feature of people's lives, including showing some 2012 users "positive" or "negative" posts to see how it would affect them.

Going forward, Facebook also plans to revise its practice of trying new features and designs in select markets. "We have regional elections in two weeks, and a lot of members of the fascist party are candidates, so it's not a good time to hide posts of serious news and show people a odd cocktail of random popular posts". Facebook has been criticized many times in the past for its role in spreading fake news, which has led the company to admit it can sometimes be damaging to democracy.

MPs and officials in the USA have questioned the site, along with other internet giants such as Google and Twitter, over their policing of such content as well as the use of their platforms to create political discourse.

In addition to stopping the split News Feed test, Facebook says that it will look at how it tests new products in the future.

Launched last October, Facebook's Explore feed was designed as a separate feed for content from publishers and public figures they might be interested in based their own interests.

Facebook concluded that "Explore" was not an effective way for people to discover new content on Facebook.

Facebook announced Thursday it no longer plans on altering its News Feed by having one for friends and family then another for sponsored content.
