CT Joins Regional Gun-Control Coalition

States band together to take action on gun violence

Four governors announced a coalition this week to attempt to stop out-of-state guns from coming into their localities with an information-sharing database to trace and intercept firearms.

"Gun violence is not a New Jersey problem, a NY problem, a CT problem, a Rhode Island problem, or a problem for any particular state or region - it is a national problem", New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said.

The plan also calls for the creation of a cross-state task force to combat illegal gun trafficking and a new research consortium to examine gun violence.

Four Democratic Governors say they're not waiting for President Trump or Congress to come up with a solution for gun violence. That is where they are going to go in Washington. Why?

There's plenty of talk about how to prevent mass shootings like the one last week at a school in Parkland, Florida. For years, gun control advocates have said such research is hamstrung at the federal level.

State law enforcement agencies will be given details on firearm purchase or permit denials for people who are disqualified, according to the release.

Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo said the collaboration will put together existing resources that will strengthen efforts against gun violence for all member states.

Meeting with Florida shooting survivors, Trump proposes to arm teachers with guns
There is so much that we can do to help people before it reaches that point, and I urge you please stay focused on that as well. On March 24, students are planning a protest march in Washington , with similar sister rallies planned across the country.

CT has a law barring people subject to a temporary restraining order from buying guns, but those people can easily travel to another state and purchase a firearm, Malloy said. The four state fusion centers that will jointly share information under this agreement are the New York State Intelligence Center, the Connecticut Intelligence Center, New Jersey Regional Operations Intelligence Center, and the Rhode Island State Fusion Center.

Murphy hopes to get universities involved in creating the nation's first regional gun violence consortium to collect data and make recommendations on how to stem the slaughter.

NICS, which searches three nationally held databases, is overseen by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

In Rhode Island, Gov. Raimondo added that she will push the state legislature to adopt tighter gun control measures.

Rep. William Tong, the judiciary committee's co-chairman, said the first step has already been taken as the committee approved drafting bills banning so-called "bump stocks" and "ghost guns". New York's database, for example, lists more than 70,000 people who are prohibited from possessing firearms because mental health professionals have diagnosed them as likely to hurt themselves or others.

"Let's be clear what "comprehensive background checks" means - subjecting all commercial sales (gun stores/shows, online sales) to checks", Murphy wrote in a tweet.
