Pakistan looks to avoid being added to terror financing…

Pakistan earlier this year submitted a report about the progress it had made in curbing terrorist financing

But, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said early on Wednesday that the U.S. has failed in its bid against Pakistan.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said late on February 20 that the intergovernmental Financial Action Task Force decided not to take action immediately on the USA move to add Pakistan to the so-called "gray list" of countries which are not doing enough to comply with terrorist-funding regulations.

He said in his tweet that our efforts paid off as no consensus was reached on United States led motion to put Pakistan on watch list during the FATF Paris meeting on Tuesday.

"No consensus for nominating Pakistan", Asif wrote, adding that the forum instead proposed a three-month pause along with the submission of a new report to the body.

Asif in a midnight tweet thanked "friends" who helped Pakistan avoid a major worldwide embarrassment.

Pakistan has sent adviser to prime minister on finance, Dr Miftah Ismail, to attend the FATF meeting at a time when the activities of Hafiz Saeed's Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and the Falah-e-Insaniyat Foundation (FIF) have created problems for the Pakistan government, media reports said.

Pakistan's case will now be reviewed by the group in June, Asif said, calling the delay a diplomatic success.

South Korea, US to hold postponed military drills "as planned": USFK
Both the South and North appear to be tip-toeing around these issues during the period of the Pyeongchang Olympics, he said. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis would announce their plans after the Paralympics end March 18 and before April.

Ahsan Iqbal, while speaking ahead of a meeting of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), stressed that if Pakistan's name is added to the "watchlist", it will negatively impact the war against terrorism.

According to the original plan, the Director General Financial Monitoring Unit, a joint secretary-level official of the Ministry of Finance and representatives from the State Bank of Pakistan and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan were to represent Pakistan at the FATF meeting.

In explaining what adding Pakistan to the FATF watchlist would to the country, Diaa Hadid, an Islamabad-based reporter for National Public Radio (NPR), notes that it "would make it harder for Pakistan to obtain global loans and for investors to come here".

According to official sources, Ismail visited Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands last week in an attempt to garner support against the USA move.

According to Miftah Ismail, Pakistan's de facto finance minister, Britain, France, and Germany have been identified as co-sponsors of the us motion to designate Pakistan as a global terrorist financier.

Pakistan called the USA gray-listing move "politically motivated", but officials said they were concerned that it could hurt Pakistan's banking sector, causing economic pain as a national election looms.
