If You Want to Live a Long Life, Start Drinking!

'Modest' alcohol consumption could help you live longer

A 2007 paper published by the study's researchers found that seniors who drank two or more alcoholic drinks a day (it didn't matter what kind) had a 15-percent reduced risk of death compared to nondrinkers. But you shouldn't give up your workouts just yet.

According to the study, people who drank moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who abstained and people who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than normal or underweight people did. "Keep in mind that I start studying people when they're 90", Kawas said. Researchers also collected data on the participant's medical history, hobbies, diet, and daily activities.

Exercise or alcohol? When it comes to living a long life - booze may actually help you live longer than hitting the treadmill.

In an address at the American Association for the Advancement of of Science annual conference, Kawas said, "It's not bad to be skinny when you're young but it's very bad to be skinny when you're old". Ergo, drinking is better than exercise! "Maybe that can tell us something", Kawas added.

Postal Worker shot and killed on Dallas interstate
Postal Service Inspector in charge of the Fort Worth Division said safety of postal employees is of the utmost importance. Postal Service was fatally shot early Monday on a Dallas highway, according to local reports.

The study also found that over 40% of people aged 90 and older suffer from dementia while nearly 80% are disabled. Additionally, people with daily hobbies were 21% less likely to die early, and coffee drinkers tended to live longer than non-coffee drinkers, by about 10%.

Binge drinking - defined as downing at least four drinks for women or five drinks for men within a few hours - is especially unsafe. And really, who are we to doubt her?

She is particularly interested in why some people can reach the age 90, and why others cannot.
