Elise Christie To Compete In 1000m Heats Amidst Injury

Elise Christie falls as Dutch rival Yara van Kerkhof glides past

British speed skater Elise Christie is nothing if not persistent. I can't describe the pain I was in.

Christie has found the social media environment a troubling space in the past, her equilibrium not surprisingly upset by the death threats issued by Korean trolls during the Sochi games. She did, and managed to come through in second place.

Elise Christie's Olympics curse continued on Tuesday when she crashed early in her 1000 metres short track speed skating heat and, in the restarted race, was disqualified after finishing second.

"I'm a bit shell-shocked", the 27-year-old, who has crashed or been disqualified in each of the six races she has taken part in at the last two Olympics, told the BBC.

But Christie arrived at PyeongChang 2018 battle hardened.

The stage was set for Christie to right the wrongs of four years ago.

She went back to the start and immediately fell behind, nearly deliberately so that she could find her stride.

Her participation in the heats for her favoured distance was only confirmed one hour before the start, and it was evident she was still troubled by the injury as she struggled to make the start line for the re-start of her heat.

She recovered to finish second before being carried out of the arena, seemingly safely through to Thursday's quarterfinals.

Winter storm on the way for the Northeast
But wait - today's forecast from the National Weather Service is calling for partly cloudy skies and highs in the low-40s. Many areas will be dry, but places that got snow or rain during the day might well have wet pavement by Sunday evening.

Christie has endured a miserable campaign, and her disqualification for two penalties as she forced her way through the field was a somewhat fitting end.

She said: "I'm in a different place to Sochi".

"I might well have damaged it more being kicked at the start but to me that didn't matter - I've trained all my life for this".

She faced a late fitness test to determine whether she would return in time for what is her last chance at Olympics glory this year.

"I just thought it was a normal race and I moved up and I qualified and I was so happy", Christie said.

Atkin, who came third in the 2017 World Championships, scored 84.60 with her final run to claim a second medal of the Games for Team GB after Dom Parson also won a bronze in the men's skeleton on Friday.

If she's bumped and bruised, Christie isn't quitting anytime soon. "I would just like to thank all the kids who have sent me messages saying they are inspired". It's just been torture - what else can I say?

"In this world you're going to get a few haters", Hay said. "I'm devastated that I couldn't".

But rather than repeat the tearful reaction that followed her 500m final exit, Christie appeared to accept that she was always going to be up against it in the 1000m due to her injured ankle, and vowed to compete again in 2022 despite her initial plans to change sports for the next Winter Olympics in Beijing.
