Canada's loss to Czech Republic a tale of missed opportunities

The Canadians twice blew one-goal leads on Saturday before falling 3-2 in a shootout to the Czech Republic at the Gangneung Hockey Centre. "We can't dwell on it", said Canada's Maxim Noreau, whose final shootout shot clanked off the left post to seal the Czech triumph.

Canada looks to continue their dominance against the Czech Republic by scoring early in the game and protecting the lead.

After both of the next shooters missed, Canada had a chance to tie but after beating Czech goalie Pavel Francouz with a nice move, Maxim Noreau's soft shot bounced off the post, giving the Czechs the win.

Canada have outscored their opponents 11-2 so far and have the competition's second-highest scoring efficiency at 10.68 percent, just behind Switzerland who topped Group B.

The loss was the Canadian men's first at the Games since Vancouver 2010 when they lost 5-3 to the U.S.in preliminary-round play.

But the closer the game got to overtime, the more the intensity increased as desperation ruled.

"Now we just move ahead. We expect a good game". Bourque has scored three goals in the two parties since the beginning of the tournament.

Even though Canada was controlling the play and had a wide edge in shots on goal, the Czechs kept it close, tying the score at 2-2 just 25 seconds into the second period on a goal. We know we have to get better. Dominik Kubalik tied things up for the Czechs at 6:52 in the same period.

Two saves later, Noreau had to score to keep Canada alive. Canada had won 11 consecutive games at the Olympics - the first 10 with National Hockey League players - dating to a loss to the United States in pool play in Vancouver. Scrivens stopped a pair of shots from Roman Horak and Michal Birner, but couldn't contain the rebounds, and former Carolina Hurricane Michal Jordan snatched the loose puck and went top shelf. Each team killed a penalty in the third period on the way to over-time. Roy made some nifty rushes but couldn't finish it off, while Mat Robinson broke up a two-on-one before losing the puck on a breakaway.
