Four questions about the Ethiopian PM's resignation

Ethiopia begins six-month state of emergency

Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn resigned on Thursday less than 24 hours after the resignation of Jacob Zuma as South Africa's President.

This week Ethiopia has been rocked by crippling protests in towns across the restive Oromia region in which demonstrators called for the release of political prisoners and urged the government to carry out quick reforms. Opposition to an urban development plan for the capital Addis Ababa sparked public demonstrations against political restrictions, land grabbing and human rights abuses. The announcement was made amid a political crisis in the Horn of Africa country. "We should be very clear, this change, the prisoner release and the fact that the party is trying to make amends and reform is the result of years of relentless opposition and protest".

"He is unable to control the party and he is unable to control the government, and I think it is the right decision that he resigned", Hallelujah said.

For Mohammed Ademo, an analyst of Ethiopian affairs running the website Opride.com, which is often critical of the government, the move came now because the ruling party wants a more assertive person in charge during a time of crisis.

Ethiopia has also been reeling from deadly protests since 2016, especially in the two most populous regional states of Amhara and Oromia, over alleged political and economic marginalization.

"Things were deteriorating", he said, adding that many had expected a new prime minister to be named at the next congress of the ruling coalition, scheduled for this summer.

He served as deputy prime minister and foreign minister under Meles before assuming power, and he was also elected chairman of the African Union in 2013.

There are many pitfalls ahead, but the next few days will determine whether the Ethiopian nation will proceed down the path of peace and dialogue, or blunder haplessly into widespread civic unrest and bloodshed.

Being the largest ethnicity with about 35 percent of the population, Oromo activists are particularly insistent that the next prime minister be one of their own. The coalition has controlled every seat in Ethiopia's 547-strong parliament since 2015, when Seifu lost his post.
