Catholic aid organizations respond to Oxfam prostitution scandal in Haiti

Archbishop Desmond Tutu resigns as Oxfam ambassador over charity's sex scandal

Van Hauwemeiren has been among a number of employees sacked in 2011 over sexual misconduct while delivering aid to Haiti; but he was re-hired by the same charity in Ethiopia.

Aviol Fleurant, Haiti's minister of planning and external cooperation, said Oxfam officials had been summoned to meet with his ministry staff on Thursday to explain the sexual misconduct accusations allegedly perpetrated by the charity's employees in the wake of the devastating 2010 natural disaster.

The charity's own investigation in 2011 led to four people being sacked, including the man who was rehired, and three others resigning.

After Oxfam conducted its investigation into the allegations, numerous aid workers involved were allowed to resign - including the regional head of the mission.

"Some things are described correctly, but I also have read lots of lies and exaggerations", the 68-year-old said. He told them his account would make the media "blush with shame". Parties every week? Chic villas? "Women paid with money from the organisation?"

Adams told CNA that Cross Catholic Outreach assisted the Haitian Sisters of Charity of Saint-Louis in efforts to counsel and train women at risk of prostitution and trafficking in the aftermath of the quake.

A statement from the office of the South African emeritus archbishop says he is "deeply disappointed by allegations of immorality and possible criminality".

He added: "Now everything is exaggerated and that hurts, especially because my family does not want to see me anymore".

The retired church leader who played a significant role in the anti-apartheid movement said he had made a decision to resign in light of the allegations against the global charity.

Earlier this week, Mordaunt's predecessor as worldwide development secretary Priti Patel said she had faced a lack of support from DfID officials when she had tried to ensure accountability on aid effectiveness and allegations sexual abuse of adults and children.

An Oxfam spokesperson said: 'Oxfam has not and would not provide a positive reference for any of those who were dismissed or resigned as a result of the case'.

The British government's worldwide development secretary, Penny Mordaunt, is to meet investigators from the National Crime Agency to discuss the sex scandal at leading charity Oxfam.

The British government has warned that it could cut off funding for the charity, which amounted to around £32 million (36 million euros, $44 million) previous year.

But Andrew MacLeod, former chief of operations of the UN's Emergency Coordination Centre and Red Cross aid worker, said the Oxfam scandal is just the tip of the iceberg.

The Government has written to all British charities working overseas demanding "absolute assurances" that they are protecting vulnerable people and referring complaints to authorities.

The International Rescue Committee did not respond to multiple requests to reveal cases of sexual harassment or abuse.

Linda Walker, 63, from Hurley, said: "I'd hope that the collective intelligence of the people who live in Henley would appreciate the people who work in these shops do it for nothing and shouldn't be targeted".
