The White House Proposes A SNAP Food Delivery Program

In an effort to cut spending on food assistance to low-income families, the Trump administration has proposed replacing some food stamps with a meal delivery type service.

Households that receive $90 or more in SNAP benefits would get a box of 100 percent USA -grown and produced food.

Under the current program, families on SNAP receive an electronic benefits transfer card that works like a debit card they can use to buy groceries.

He says SNAP is efficient because it is a "free market model" that lets recipients shop at stores for their benefits.

If you receive money from food stamps, a proposal from the government would switch part of that benefit from dollars to non-perishable food.

States will be given substantial flexibility to distribute these food benefits to participants.

"USDA America's Harvest Box is a bold, innovative approach to providing nutritious food to people who need assistance feeding themselves and their families - and all of it is homegrown by American farmers and producers", Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue said in a statement.

Explained Hatcher: "FMI and our members have worked with the House and Senate Agriculture Committees and the USDA over several decades to achieve a national system, utilizing existing commercial infrastructure and technology to achieve the greatest efficiency, availability and lowest cost". "As a single mother who relied on food stamps to help feed my boys, I can't overstate how offensive this proposal is".

The United States maintains about 2,000 troop in Syria, mostly working with the estimated 50,000 Syrian Democratic Forces. Syrian forces control the western side of the line, and the SDF controls the eastern side of the line.

The box of food is being called "America's Harvest Box" by the Agriculture Department, the Washington Post reported.

President Donald Trump released his fiscal year 2019 budget proposal on Monday.

Trump officials told reporters on Monday that the reforms would affect approximately 16 million Americans who now participate in SNAP, or 81 percent of households in the program.

The program "will be administratively costly, inefficient, stigmatizing, and prone to failure", said Jim Weill, president of the Food Research and Action Center. Trump should trust Americans to buy the food that's right for their families - and not implement programs that may wind up costing taxpayers more than they're worth.

In a sweeping reform that is stunningly short on details, the White House is proposing major changes to the way that low-income Americans receive food benefits.

Now the food bank sends out about 2,000 boxes a month for seniors in Luzerne, Lackawanna, Wyoming and Susquehanna Counties.

Congress largely ignored Trump's proposed budget for SNAP previous year, when he wanted to cut the funding by a quarter. Opponents of the cuts also point out that the physical delivery of the food would pose a challenge for the government.
