Mikaela Shiffrin waits again as women's slalom postponed

An Olympic schedule that already looked tough enough just became tougher for Mikaela Shiffrin, whose quest to win five medals has dominated the build-up to the women's events in alpine skiing in Pyeongchang. "They said we had to do it today".

She also took gold at the 2017 World Championships in the slalom and has drawn comparisons to Michael Phelps for her incredible dominance in the event.

Alpine events have now been delayed three times this week due to weather; the women's 15 km biathlon event was also postponed today.

Alpine skiing race directors have had contingency plans in place for several days after receiving the forecasts of the high winds and on Monday appeared resigned to two more days of battling the elements. Today, the plug was pulled on her title defending slalom outing.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist American Ted Ligety missed the podium but said his fifth place finish in Tuesday's Alpine combined has given him a boost in confidence ahead of his giant slalom and super-G races at the Pyeongchang Games.

Among the women who could challenge Shiffrin in the technical races are Switzerland's Wendy Holdener, who claimed silver in the slalom and gold in the Alpine combined event at last year's world championships; Sweden's Frida Hansdotter, owner of three world championship medals in the slalom; and Slovakia's Petra Vlhova, who has won two World Cup slaloms this season. We've been through days like this before, in World Cup, quite often and the number one thing is safety and the second thing is to have a good, fair race.

The wind gusts have been strong enough to push people around; by evening, metal detectors outside venues and all signage were laid down on the ground, to prevent them from being picked up by the gusts.

"We are snowboarders and should be able to deal with it", said the 17-year-old.

On Friday, the rearranged slalom is due to be staged as the men compete in the super-G.

A large crowd had gathered well ahead of the original start time for Wednesday's race, and American fans were out in force to see Shiffrin, one of four USA starters in the field of 83.
