Red Gerard, 17, wins Team USA's first gold medal

Red Gerard won gold in the snowboarding slopestyle event to give the Americans their first medal at the 2018 Winter Games.

The 17-year-older from OH won the gold medal in slopestyle snowboarding. Canadian Max Parrot, who had fallen on each of his first two runs, then nailed his final run for the silver medal.

McMorris had an advantage knowing the score he needed to put up in his final run, but the 2014 bronze medalist under-rotated on a jump and crashed, ensuring he couldn't overtake Gerard.

Parrot captured silver in men's slopestyle while McMorris took bronze.

Krueger made his break for glory with little more than a lap to go, striking out on his own and leaving the rest of the field struggling. It was one of the highest-scoring rail sections of the day.

Both Corning and Stassel will have the chance to respond to the disappointment in the big air competition later in the Olympics. Bach asked, referencing that Gerard's first two runs were 43- and 46-point duds.

Snowboarder Gerard, 17, who hopes to one day become a firefighter, turned the heat up on the freezing slopes to seal a late bid for Olympic glory.

"I was really happy when I saw I came in as first", said Gerard.

Cubs, Darvish agree to 6-year deal
Darvish finished second in the American League Cy Young voting in 2013, one of two seasons in which he made more than 30 starts. His 27 home runs allowed and 1.3 home runs per nine innings were the worst of his career.

His medal came on an eventful day after an quake triggered an alert, winds disrupted events and a fire warning was issued on a day of more sub-zero cold that left athletes and spectators shivering.

"The whole way through the course I was taking it feature by feature, all the way to the end", Gerard said.

Gerard, at 17 the youngest in the men's competition, landed a flawless backside triple cork 1440 on his final run. "I never thought I'd end up learning tricks in the backyard".

Compatriot Mark McMorris pushed Parrot all the way, qualifying with the second highest score from heat two.

The final will still be held Monday (Sunday night in the U.S.), but all 27 athletes will now compete in the final, and it will be a two-run format. I mean, are you kidding me?

American teenager Maame Biney advanced safely through to the quarterfinals of the short track 500 meters, and she lit up when talking about her first Olympic experience.

"I'm on the podium and I probably shouldn't even be here", McMorris said. "And if you were to fall on all three of your runs, that'd be a pretty big bummer, but I kind of know they're always going to be there for me".
