Johnson urges Aung San Suu Kyi to help Rohingya refugees

Myanmar Rejects Report Detailing Killing of Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State

The Foreign Secretary met with Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Sunday where he called on her to help thousands of displaced Rohingya return to their homes in Rakhine State.

The Reuters report drew on interviews with Buddhists who confessed to torching Rohingya homes, burying bodies and killing Muslims in what they said was a frenzy of violence triggered when Rohingya insurgents attacked security posts last August.

Hundreds of thousands of the Muslim minority have fled what the United Nations has called a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.

In November, Bangladesh and Myanmar signed an agreement to begin repatriating Rohingya refugees by the end of January, but Dhaka suspended it at the last minute.

After visiting the Cox's Bazar camp, home to more than 500,000 refugees, Mr Johnson said the "horrendous living conditions" further strengthened his commitment to finding a solution.

'I underlined the importance of the Burmese authorities carrying out a full and independent investigation into the violence in Rakhine, and to hold to account those responsible for human rights violations'.

'I pay tribute to the hospitality and compassion shown by the government of Bangladesh, who are facing an enormous challenge in providing humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya community.

But aid agencies have expressed concern over the projected figures for the transfer - Myanmar has agreed to accept 1,500 Rohingya each week; Bangladesh says it aims to return everyone within two years.

Britain's foreign secretary has said it is "vital" that Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh should be allowed to return to Myanmar "in safety and with dignity".

Johnson met with the embattled Myanmar leader, whose reputation among the global community has crumbled over her handling of the Rohingya crisis, in the capital Naypyidaw while on a four-day Asian tour. It is looking at the problems in Rakhine state.

The Bangladesh border where refugees are sheltered is set to welcome foreign minister Boris Johnson who plans to embark on a trip to its camps.

Johnson was scheduled to fly on to Bangkok later Sunday for a visit that will include meetings with junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha and the Thai chairman of an advisory board on the Rohingya crisis.
