At 5:20 p.m. Saturday, a Papillon Airways EC-130 helicopter carrying a pilot and six passengers crashed near Quartermaster Canyon on the Hualapai Nation, Bradley said in a news release. The four people who were injured were treated at the spot, Bradley added.

A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said it suffered "substantial damage". Federal authorities are expected to investigate the incident.

Hualapai Police Chief Francis Bradley said the helicopter, used for tour flights, was from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Images emerged on Twitter of flames and thick black smoke rising from among the layers of rock at the scene of the crash.
