Apple's security challenged as former intern leaks iOS source code

A secret part of Apple’s iPhone software has been posted onlineMore

Since Motherboard published the news, Apple has indeed confirmed that the code for its mobile phone operating system has been leaked online. The leaker hoped that the code would help the jailbreaking community circumvent Apple's notoriously hard to crack walled-garden mobile operating system.

Plus, Apple said the leaked code is three-years-old, so there is no need to panic.

The company wants its consumers to stay up to date with their iOS. After an iPhone or iPad is turned on, iBoot loads and begins to start the main iOS processes.

The access to iBoot's code may have several implications; it could allow researchers to find vulnerabilities in the systems more easily, but it might also open the door to less benevolent hackers willing to exploit the hole.

Eventually others joined the group of five people and the code spread from there, despite the possibility it could be used to compromise iPhone security and the likelihood of an investigation and massive legal retaliation from Apple.

Motherboard quoted Jonathan Levin, an author of numerous books on iOS and macOS system programming, saying it was the biggest leak in Apple's history, and he's not far wrong.

Stats: Virat Kohli's 34th ODI century breaks more records
After registering his first-ever ODI ton on South African soil in the opening game, Kohli went one step further in Cape Town . Kohli and other batsmen have followed the lead of bowlers and this third ODI could prove to be the most decisive match.

Again, the typical iPhone user is probably not in any danger, thanks to Apple's recent security upgrades on their devices. The codes have since been removed after Apple asked for it claiming that it is proprietary material and is not meant for open circulation on the web.

"There are many layers of hardware and software protections built in to our products, and we always encourage customers to update to the newest software releases to benefit from the latest protections", Apple said in its statement. While Apple has responded that it's not an issue for the security of current products, some believe it could still be important in finding new vulnerability and bugs in iOS.

Only 7% of iOS devices are using a version older than iOS 10, which was released in 2016, to Apple's website. It's not yet known who leaked the code and what their motives for leaking it was. It ensures that the code being run is valid and is from Apple only.

Cyber security expert Amit Sethi from Synopsys said the leak was unlikely to have a major impact on users.

"I was really paranoid about it getting leaked immediately by one of us", another one of the original people to receive the code said.
