New PS4 5.50 Update Makes Organizing Games Easier, Adds PS4 Pro Functionality

PlayStation 4 Update 5.50

The update, prosaically known as PlayStation system software 5.50 beta, will be rolling out for users of PS4 who signed up and were selected for the program according to Sony. Sadly, there is no indication of when the 5.50 update will be pushed, but those of you that have signed up for beta updates are able to try it out now. Keep an eye on email regarding the details to get an access to this update.

In system software update 5.00 we introduced a range of parental control enhancements. Play Time Management allows Family Managers the ability to set time limits on different users along with content management for video games and media. The settings also allow parents or guardians to set the PS4 to log out when the child's play session ends, and also to add to or cut game time.

Users can also now import images via a USB stick to create custom wallpapers on the PS4. Just go to Settings Themes Select Theme Custom Select Image USB Storage Device. To set your logo and background, head over to Events Teams select your team Edit Team Profile. This feature will permit you to set limits on daily time and track playing time, even from smartphone or PC. Microsoft also offers the same feature for its Xbox One X 4K HDR game console and their own list of select games.

Other updates include new tabs added to help users manage the installed items on their PS4 system. If your PS Plus membership is expired, a PS Plus icon with a lock will appear next to your game so you know which games you can play if you re-subscribe.

We're adding a function that will allow you to hide certain applications under the "Purchased" tab in the Library. In addition, you can also prevent recurring ones coming back again. There will also be a "Purchased" tab for hiding all sorts of apps that clutter your interface and an option for deleting old notifications is being introduced.

And finally, PlayStation Now background music should work in the same way as other games played locally from the console.

PS4 Pro users taking part in the beta will see a new "supersampling mode" under Settings, which enables those with HDTVs (i.e., 1080p or less) to enjoy an enhanced visual experience when playing some PS4 games. This process involves a game being rendered at a higher resolution (up to 4K, in the case of certain PS4 games) and then downscaled to your display's resolution, thereby providing greater clarity. That said, Sony warns that performance may vary with this, as various games are optimized differently.
