Redskins mull using franchise tag on Kirk Cousins again

Laquon Treadwell

Washington is thinking about franchise tagging and trying to trade quarterback Kirk Cousins, rather than letting him leave for a quarterback-needy team like the Jets in free agency, according to ESPN. Cousins will undoubtedly be the most sought-after quarterback on the free agent market this summer. It looks like I'm going to be a free agent on March 14.

Of course, if the Redskins do slap the tag on Cousins again and he obliges, the Smith trade could go up in smoke. March 12 is the date for teams to get in contact with players set to become unrestricted free agents at that 4 p.m. deadline on March 14, with a ton of action happening that week.

Cousins does have some control and he could force Washington into an uncomfortable situation if they place the franchise tag on him.

If he signs off on the franchise tag, he's guaranteed $34.5 million in 2018, but loses another year in which he could sign a long-term contract.

In the aftermath of the Redskins' move to acquire Alex Smith from the Chiefs, the team reportedly is considering placing its franchise tag on Kirk Cousins. Cousins may also hold off on signing the franchise tag if there is no sign he could get a long-term deal that he wants from the team he is possibly traded to.

Tagging Cousins also gives the Redskins some say on where he plays next season, particularly since there are several NFC teams - with the Cardinals near the top of the list - looking for stability at the quarterback position.

Famous Groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil Prediction Revealed for 2018
On Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Phil's "Inner Circle" - garbed in top hats and tuxedos - announced his prediction at 7:25 a.m. The event now attracts up to 30,000 visitors to Punxsutawney, Jefferson County, located about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

"At the end of the day, I want to win", he told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Friday. I understood that. They wanted to do a deal, but because I wanted to go a little longer, it put them in a tough spot. However, you have names like Cousins and Drew Brees that could be interesting names to follow for teams needing a big name to lead their huddle.

Teams can begin designating players for the franchise tag February 20. He has not missed a game in any of the past three seasons. For Kansas City, Andy Reid and the front office are ready to hand the keys of the offense over to Patrick Mahomes, a player who KC spent a first round pick on in last year's draft.

Cousins may be interested in coming to a Cleveland team that is young and that has been stuck in a 20- some year rebuild.

Sure, they could. They have two second-round picks this year (37th and 49th).

The Redskins, though, would be eligible for some compensation for Cousins in free agency. Cousins told USA Today he spoke to owner Dan Snyder and coach Jay Gruden, but not team president Bruce Allen.
