Tillerson: Latin American Countries Should Not Rely on Chinese Investments

Sec. of State Rex Tillerson to outline Latin America policy priorities at UT Austin

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned Mexico today to be wary that Russian Federation does not interfere when it elects its next president in July.

In a statement the Chinese government blasted the US, describing Tillerson's comments as going "against the truth", and charging the USA with displaying "disrespect to the vast number of Latin American countries".

A more common motif accompanying Tillerson's travels will be the question of Venezuela and the country's president, Nicolas Maduro, despite a pre-agreement reached between the government and political opposition in the Dominican Republic Wednesday.

Venezuela is in its fifth year of a worsening political and economic crisis. She said it's time for all sides to see that the USA and Latin American nations are permanent neighbors.

Tillerson has adopted an optimistic approach, whatever Trump's rhetoric.

Tillerson now is wrapping up his visit to Mexico and will leave Mexico on Friday afternoon to continue his tour to Argentina, Peru, Colombia and Jamaica, where he will complete his five-nation tour on February 7.

"In the history of Venezuela and South American countries, it is often times that the military is the agent of change when things are so bad and the leadership can no longer serve the people", said Tillerson.

The black unemployment rate spiked in January, muddling Trump's message
"Something I'm very proud of: African American unemployment stands at the lowest rate ever recorded", Trump bragged. Trump's State of the Union address was not the first time he touted the low African-American unemployment rate.

"The great tragedy of Venezuela is that, although it could be one of the most prosperous countries in the region, it is one of the poorest, " Tillerson said. As with in the Middle East, he is familiar with numerous main actors: He wrangled with Venezuelan officials shortly after becoming chief executive officer of Exxon Mobil Corp. when the late President Hugo Chavez nationalized the company's assets in the country in 2007.

But first he will have to overcome the aftermath of Trump's aggressive brand of diplomacy.

Mexico and President Donald Trump may not see eye-to-eye on certain issues but that hasn't stopped the country from forming a pretty solid bond with the United States, the country's foreign relations secretary revealed.

Differences over the issue did not preclude Videgaray from praising the U.S. He said the Mexican government's relationship with the Trump administration is "closer" than it was with former President Barack Obama's administration. He said only that the accord needs to be "modernized" and didn't mention Trump's border wall.

Russia, he said, "continues to sell arms and military equipment to unfriendly regimes who do not share or respect democratic values".

But Mr. Maduro shrugged off the worldwide pressure last month, when the Constituent Assembly under his control pushed forward the date of the presidential election to April. "We stand with the region as a steady, enduring partner".
