The black unemployment rate spiked in January, muddling Trump's message

"Something I'm very proud of: African American unemployment stands at the lowest rate ever recorded", Trump bragged.

All of the unemployment talk fits squarely in the nationalist agenda that Trump and especially former adviser Steve Bannon tried to push: Black unemployment is at an all-time low and it's because of Trump, so vote for him next time.

From January to December 2017, the unemployment rate among black Americans fell 1 percentage point.

Trump's State of the Union address was not the first time he touted the low African-American unemployment rate.

That dichotomy - the jobs talk and the clashes between Trump and prominent black figures (or comments received very unfavorably by black commentators) - reflects an nearly certain fatal flaw in the Trump-Bannon-style nationalist agenda that argues voters care more about class than anything else.

Trump then lamented the fact that Democrats refused to clap during the State of the Union when he brought up low unemployment rates among African-Americans, arguing that it proved they "would rather see us not do well than see our country do great".

The Bureau of Labor Statistics part of the Department of Labor released statistics Friday showing that black unemployment spiked by 0.9% last month
Trump can't cite his favorite stat about black unemployment being the “lowest ever” anymore

"Somebody please inform Jay-Z that because of my policies, Black Unemployment has just been reported to be at the LOWEST RATE EVER RECORDED!"

"President Trump's racist rhetoric makes the country less safe for people of color by encouraging, emboldening and pandering to those who wish to do harm to others based on the color of their skin", Richmond said. Trump himself became part of the national conversation surrounding sexual misconduct during his 2016 election campaign when a decade-old tape surfaced that included audio of Trump and Billy Bush having a lewd conversation about women. "It's not about money at the end of the day", he said.

The CBC chairman also leveled the charge made by lawmakers and economists alike that Trump is just riding the economic wave that began during President Barack Obama's tenure. It doesn't. That's missing the whole point. To kickoff Black History Month last February, he clumsily referenced 19th-century abolitionist Frederick Douglass as if he were still alive. Trump has been in office for 378 days now, long enough for him to be blamed for everything in America that isn't what it should be.

After the speech, President Trump was congratulated by Republicans on the floor of the House. Now it looks like Stephen Miller and the other White House aides who put words in Trump's mouth and teleprompter will need to chuck that talking point.

As of this writing, Jay-Z has not responded to the jobs report statistic, having yet to take a moment to lob a quick "I told you so" at President Trump.
