Second woman 'arrested' in Tehran for hijab protest

Masih Alinejad, an Iranian activist and the founder of, a social media campaign that began four years go in which women in Iran post pictures of themselves without their headscarves, said the protests are not against Islam or women who choose to wear the hijab.

A second woman has reportedly been arrested in Iran for protesting against the country's compulsory hijab rules after standing on a telecoms box on a Tehran street, taking off her headscarf and holding it aloft on a stick.

In the photos, the women's heads are uncovered as they stand on utility boxes or other objects on the streets of Tehran with scarves held up on sticks. Although they were not directly linked, her action embodied the aspirations of a movement of young Iranians frustrated with the lack of social and political freedoms. Thousands of people, including men, have changed their profile pictures in support of Movahed.

A Tehran resident, who requested anonymity, told Euronews that a lot of women are protesting the dress code imposed by Iranian government by taking their headscarves off.

Narges Hosseini was arrested within 10 minutes of removing her hijab along with two people filming her, Iran's foremost human rights lawyer, Nasrin Sotoudeh, told The Guardian. In December 2017, 31-year-old protestor identified as Vida Movahed took off her headscarf on the same street.

"Women show their opposition to such forceful approaches by their very clothing, from resisting covering their hair to wearing long boots and leggings", she wrote in a series of tweets this week. The protests in Tehran Monday were against the mandatory hijab laws that have been in place since the 1979 revolution that ushered in the current government. "Let women decide themselves about their own body".

The Center for Human Rights in Iran, a New York-based advocacy group, said on Friday some detainees arrested in the protests are facing charges that are punishable by death. Despite the fear of reprisals, millions of women in Iran defy the restrictions on a daily basis.
