Michigan State athletic director announces retirement

Lou Anna Simon president of Michigan State University in Detroit Mich. on Nov. 9 2017

"Now is a time to say that no more do sexual assaults or sexual abuse have a place on our campus or any campus in our nation".

Hollis said that he was not asked to retire or pressured "in any way" to leave his post. "Let me be clear, in retirement, I will fully cooperate" with investigations into MSU by NCAA and MI attorney general office.

Michigan State gymnastics team student coach Lindsey Lemke, who gave a victim's impact statement during Nassar's sentencing on seven charges, told the crowd she was inspired by their numbers. Several of the victims who addressed the court were former athletes at the university, and many victims charged the school with mishandling complaints about Nassar as far back as the late 1990s.

Also new this morning, the US Olympic Committee announcing it is giving every member of USA Gymnastics until next Wednesday to resign or the organization will be decertified.

In an emotional interview with ABC News' Elizabeth Vargas, airing Friday on "20/20", Lemke and her mother, Christy, said Klages defended Nassar as news of the scandal broke, characterizing the alleged sexual abuse as "a legal medical procedure".

Days after Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon claimed in her resignation letter that "there is no cover-up" regarding allegations of sexual misconduct by Larry Nassar, ESPN is reporting otherwise. The school's governing board expressed support for Simon, but she eventually succumbed to pressure from students, faculty and lawmakers.

The US Senate, the House of Representatives and the federal Department of Education launched separate investigations Friday into sexual abuse in sports in the wake of twisted sports doctor Larry Nassar's sickening scandal. Board member Joel Ferguson apologized this week for saying previously that some victims were ambulance chasers seeking a payday.

Instead, those conclusions were part of a second report that went to Michigan State University's Office of General Counsel, Nassar and his then-boss at the College of Osteopathic Medicine, William Strampel.

The protest is planned to start at six o'clock Friday night.

In 2012, Hollis was named Athletic Director of the Year by Street & Smith's SportsBusiness Journal/Daily. He's vice president and secretary of the MSU Board of Trustees.

Simon's resignation is a positive change, Milroy said, but the school's problems weren't exclusively caused by her.

Hollis' retirement also comes the same day that ESPN's Outside The Lines published a damning report that alleges Michigan State covered up or ignored sexual assault crimes committed by athletes and coaches on the school's basketball and football programs.

But from the bottom, the MSU students want change. Some gymnasts have reported Nassar assaulted them there.

While all of these changes are swift and precise, will they actually change anything in the athletic community?

Michigan State gymnastics coach Kathie Klages resigned a year ago after she was suspended for defending Nassar. But people with subpoena power need to re-examine each of these cases individually-not only the Nassar cases, but all of them-and determine whether Michigan State officials handled them appropriately.
