Local DACA recipients, political leaders react to citizenship proposal

Breitbart the right-wing outlet formerly run by Trump’s ex-chief strategist Stephen Bannon blasted the President’s proposal

Trump has proposed a path to citizenship for 1.8 million children whose parents came to the country illegally, as part of a deal that would also include funding for a border wall.

But the new plan - drafted by Mr Stephen Miller, the President's domestic policy adviser, and General John Kelly, the White House chief of staff - was immediately rejected by Democrats, immigration advocates and some Republicans, with some describing it as nothing but an attempt to rid the country of immigrants and shut the nation's borders.

Officials said they expected McConnell to bring the president's plan to the Senate floor for a vote during the week of February 5, just days before the February 8 expiration of a short-term government spending plan.

The nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute said it believes the largest share of the White House's 1.8 million people who'd be eligible for citizenship - 1.3 million - are people who now meet all of DACA's eligibility requirements.

The end of the lottery system - which was introduced in 1990 to diversify the origins of new immigrants - was expected and has support from some Democrats.

Trump's plan would require Congress to set up a $25 billion "trust fund" to build a wall on the southern border with Mexico, and invest in better protections at the northern border with Canada.

Jerome Powell to succeed Janet Yellen as next chairman of Federal Reserve
In November 2017, President Trump nominated Powell, known as a "soft-spoken centrist", as the next head of the US Federal Reserve .

Evangelicals leaders are celebrating Donald Trump's announcement of a "pathway" that could allow hundreds of thousands of people, brought into the U.S. illegally as children, to apply for citizenship.

"I don't consider myself to be on the far right".

Espinosa welcomes President Trump's proposed path to citizenship for 1.8 million Dreamers but worries about certain requirements.

Mark Krikorian, the executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, encouraged his Twitter followers to tweet photos of burning Make America Great Again hats in protest of Trump's supposed capitulation.

A lot of similar responses, and I think it just comes down to the fact that President Trump's shifting positions on immigration and also the rhetoric he's used from the campaign through his presidency, notably the slur he used in that infamous moment in the White House a couple weeks ago talking about African countries. (It's propsed cuts in legal immigration alone could add up to 40 percent.) If Democrats balk at betraying other immigrants to save this one group, Trump can turn around and blame them when he starts deporting the DACA recipients. "Ignoring our many immigration problems is a form of amnesty that must end". "It is extremely generous in terms of the DACA piece and then fulfills all four of the President's priorities", a senior White House official told reporters on Thursday. 'I'm especially glad it outlines a path to citizenship. "I'm negotiating with someone - I'm not going to say he got badly beaten".

Senator Ted Cruz called the move a "profound mistake" and said it's not consistent with the promises made to voters. After all, the Dems will have turned down full relief for around two million young (and youngish) illegal immigrants in the name of chain migration, the diversity lottery, resisting the wall - none of which is terribly popular.
