MX will fight tariffs on washers, solar panels

The four-year tariffs will decrease 5% per year

MIDF Research said export growth to the United States could decelerate by between 3% and 5%, as the new tariffs on solar panels and washing machines will affect Malaysian manufacturers.

BNEF doesn't expect the tariffs to benefit US manufacturers, partly because they only last a few years, according to Hugh Bromley, an analyst at the London-based research arm of Bloomberg LP.

President Trump continued his America-first agenda on Monday by passing a 4 year tariff on all solar panel imports from the Asian country.

Instead, the USA would use a range of trade policy "sticks" to address the widening trade deficit with China such as anti-dumping actions and investigations into unfair trade practices and violations of intellectual property rights.

"Today, China dominates the global supply chain and, by its own admission, is looking to increase its capacity to account for 70 percent of total planned global capacity expansions announced in the first half of 2017", the office said.

The Solar Energy Industries Association, a trade group, estimates that the tariffs will eliminate 23,000 jobs this year and lead to the cancellation of billions of dollars' worth of solar investments.

The ITC ruled in September that cheap foreign solar imports had caused "serious injury" to the USA solar industry and proposed a series of tariffs to the Trump administration last fall. "So while a solar panel tariff will create some manufacturing jobs in the few hundreds, there are tens of thousands of jobs that will be lost because of the increase in the cost of solar panels". That migration has resulted in lower-priced solar projects, which is helping to drive consumer demand because the time to recoup upfront installation costs is shorter than ever.

Preston began his career as a therapy dog in September 2016 at Small Talk Children's Assessment Center in Lansing. Emma Ann Miller asked to be publicly identified, and her mother gave consent for her to do so in court.

"These cases were filed by American businesses and thoroughly litigated at the International Trade Commission over a period of several months", said Ambassador Lighthizer.

"The global solar industry will adjust", Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency, said Tuesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The company and Georgia-based manufacturer Suniva had hoped for 50 percent tariffs on foreign-made solar panels, saying that was what was necessary for American solar manufacturers to compete.

The SE statement added that the United States' importation of Mexican solar panels encourages the development of renewable energies, which in turn contribute to a reduction of the use of fossil fuels. Other manufacturers from Asia voiced similar sentiments.

In other words, the tariffs are definitely not welcome, and definitely damaging to the solar industry, but they don't amount to an existential threat.

According to Goldman Sachs, the upshot is that solar demand in the USA could see a reduction of 5 percent this year, although a steeper drop off is possible if some projects are delayed into 2019.

The relief will include a tariff of 30 per cent in the first year, 25 per cent in the second year, 20 per cent in the third year, and 15 per cent in the fourth year. "The penetration of solar in the USA will continue".
