In what could be a move to challenge Amazon's domination in the market, Google might soon sell audiobooks on its Play Store, media reported.

Taking on Amazon, Google on Wednesday rolled out audiobooks with Google Assistant integration on its Play Store in nine languages across 45 countries, including in India. We're also told, you can use an Android/iOS device, web browser or a smart speaker/device with Google Assistant on board to listen to the titles you've purchased. Start your morning by listening to "Ready Player One" with the Assistant on Google Home, and continue listening with the Google Play Books app on your Pixel. They will also be available via Google Assistant which means that users will be able to play audiobooks using their Assistant-enabled smart speakers.

Unlike Audible or Kobo and their respective audiobook stores, Google is not offering a subscription service that allows customers to listen to as many audiobooks as they want after paying a reoccurring monthly fee.

Google Assistant compatibility. Audible now doesn't work with Chromecast or Google Assistant, but Google Play Books works just fine!

Audiobooks will be accessible via Google Play Books on Web, Android, iOS. Just like Audible, which, of course, is owned by Amazon.

The company is rolling out on Play and the Google Play Books app works with both Android and iOS.

The Audiobooks section on Google Play is live right now, and you can avail a 50% discount on your first book.

Most of the basic features and functions of the audiobook format it appears Google already has nailed.

"Ok Google, stop playing in 20 minutes" "OK, Google, who wrote this?" As consumers decide which speaker to purchase, they may be swayed by whichever device gives them easier access to their audiobooks, or they'll buy audiobooks from whichever company makes their speaker. "Play Books has also been around for a long time, offering over 5 million ebooks in 75 countries, and interest in audiobooks is on the rise, along with audio content generally (e.g. digital music, podcasts, etc.)".
