Intel recommends PC users avoid their Spectre patch

Intel provides reboot issue guidance

As Intel began to roll out patches for the flaws, problems cropped up.

"We recommend that OEMs, cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors, and end users stop deployment of current versions on specific platforms", Intel executive vice president Neil Shenoy said in a statement, "as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior". Earlier in January, Windows halted updates to computers with chips made by AMD when reports surfaced that some computers shut down and couldn't be rebooted after users installed the updates.

Intel says that it has root-caused the issue on Haswell and Broadwell systems and that it has already issued a version of the fix to hardware partners, which are now testing it. Intel's official advisory to hardware partners hasn't changed: Don't issue anymore of the bugged update and start testing the new one. It also advised customers of certain systems (a full list is here) to stop deploying the patches until the updated patches are released. Now, Intel seems to be giving up on those patches entirely.

Spectre and Meltdown expose an intrinsic flaw in the chip design that can enable a machine's kernel memory data to be compromised. That's because manufacturers deliver the Spectre and Meltdown updates to the chips through a different program. For more information on how to update a PC with a vulnerable chip, see CNET's guide on keeping Windows computers safe from Meltdown. Lawsuits predicably followed as the chipmaker, along with almost every other major tech company, frantically pushed out updates to patch the vulnerability.

More importantly, the exec says that Intel has finally identified the root cause of reboot issues on Broadwell and Haswell processors. It developed a software-based mitigation for Variant 2 called Retpoline that it found does not impact performance.

Intel didn't immediately respond to a comment on Torvald's criticism.
