Unveiled late Wednesday in a special streaming event, Nintendo's newest Switch experience consists not just of software, but also special sheets of cardboard from which players will punch out and build sophisticated physical models called "Toy-Cons" - a play on the name of the Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con controllers. Announced today (January 18), the Labo set contains 25 sheets of cardboard that players can turn, IKEA-style, into playable objects - such as a miniature keyboard, a fishing rod, a motorbike's handles and pedal, a small house, and a auto - by following instructions on their Switch screen.
You were mistaken: the Nintendo Switch isn't a games console. These cardboard construction products are created to be interactive with the Switch in mind, opening the door for some of the most uniquely designed gaming accessories seen to date due to its balance between simplicity and complexity by just using cardboard and the Switch.
Nintendo is going low-tech for its newest line of video game accessories. Think about the books and games you loved as a child.
The Labo kits come out this April and start at $69.99. For example, the bug-looking vehicle will only take about 15 minutes to build, but something more detailed like the piano will run you more towards two hours. These are put together to make a fishing rod, or a house, or a motorbike, or a piano- Hell, there's a lot that the Labo can turn into!
Officially, only two Nintendo Labo Toy-Con kits have been announced.
With Nintendo Labo, building is just as much fun as playing. This game makes use of all the fancy gyroscopic tools that exist within the Switch's JoyCons, which is good, as otherwise there's really no point for the functionality to even exist.
When assembling the cardboard toys, instructions videos will be found on the Nintendo Switch.
Then, you're trapped: either your initial purchase is entirely useless, or you've got to buy more cardboard from Nintendo. The Switch's detachable Joy Con controllers are then inserted, with their sensors detecting movement such as turning a corner to manipulate games on the screen.

Labo goes on sale on April 20th in the U.S. and April 27th in Europe.
