7-year sentence for Gargol killer in case with Facebook selfie evidence

Antoine

In March of 2015, 18-year-old Brittney Gargol was discovered strangled to death and lying on the side of a road near a landfill in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

According to Antoine, the pair had been out drinking and ended up in an argument during their night out, CBC News reported.

A series of tips later led police to a witness who said Antoine had admitted arguing with Gargol and choking her.

In court, Crown prosecutor Robin Ritter outlined a complicated investigation that took almost two years to complete. "Hope you made it home safe", she wrote in a message posted to Gargol's Facebook page, the BBC reports.

Antoine had tried to foil police investigations with a Facebook post asking where Gargol was hours after her death. After getting drunk, Antoine showed up at the friend's house and confessed to hurting Gargol. Antoine's belt was found near her body.

When questioned by police, Antoine initially told officers that she and Gargol had gone their separate ways after visiting a bar, when Gargol went home with an unknown man.

Antoine was sentenced to seven years in jail for manslaughter.

"I'll never forgive myself". Antoine admits to the killing, but says she doesn't remember strangling Gargol to death. Both girls were using alcohol and drugs on the fateful night, police said.

"My client had some very deep, personal issues that she was dealing with, and unfortunately they turned into a very tragic situation for all involved", Lisa Watson told the court. They believe she used it to strangle her friend.

"I am very, very sorry. It shouldn't have ever happened".

"Most days we can't quit contemplating Brittney, what happened that night, what she more likely than not felt battling for her life", Jennifer Gargol said.

The CBC's Charles Hamilton is Tweeting live from court.
