The UK Foreign Office has turned down a request from the Ecuadorean government to grant WikiLeaks founder Julian Assangediplomatic status.
In June 2012, Assange fled to the Ecuadorian embassy to avoid an extradition warrant over allegations of sexual misconduct and has remained there ever since.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said last April that Assange's arrest remains "a priority", adding, "Whenever a case can be made, we will seek to put some people in jail".
A United Nations panel concluded in 2016 that Assange was under arbitrary detention. Assange fears Sweden will hand him over to USA authorities who could prosecute him for publishing the documents and possibly sentence him to death.
It's foreign minister said she was seeking a "dignified" solution to his situation with Britain, who earlier refused a request by Ecuador to give him diplomatic status. Ecuador has repeatedly urged Assange not to interfere in the affairs of other countries following his frequent online comments on worldwide issues.
The Ecuadorian government has become entirely fed up with the dispute over Assange's status as it's dragged on, calling the dispute "untenable".
The moment he leaves the embassy, the United Kingdom is likely to arrest him for breaching his bail conditions when he sought asylum after losing his appeal. However, prosecutor Marianne Ny stated that she would "resume the investigation immediately" if Assange chose to "make himself available" at some future date.
The Conservative government of British Prime Minister Theresa May, meanwhile, made clear that it has no interest in any mediation and is determined to pursue its pound of flesh over Assange's bail violation.
