Cherokee Nation makes Martin Luther King Jr. Day an official tribal holiday

The congregation sang a hymn during the 31st annual Archdiocesan Community Wide Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The events, hosted by the Center for Multicultural and International Engagement , will begin at 10:10 a.m. with a chapel talk by Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs Executive Director Andrew Williams.

Dubbed the "BithEnergy MLK Unity 5K", the event will be at 8 a.m. Saturday at Columbia Gateway Drive, and is in an effort to "unify the community" around the celebration of the civil rights movement, said Howard County Branch NAACP President Willie Flowers.

The event is a collaboration of that office and the PSU Black Student Association.

The free day is only for day use of state parks, not overnight stays.

Organizations and groups collaborating with the Volunteer Center to offer service projects on the holiday include Digital NEST, Ecology Action, Evergreen Historical Cemetery, Homeless Garden Project, Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, Meal on Wheels and Santa Cruz Gardens Elementary.

The legislation expands the boundaries of the former Martin Luther King Jr. "There will be artistic interpretations of one of Dr. King's quotes performed by multiple students in the areas of poetry, music, dance, and art".

King, the major icon of the U.S. civil rights movement, was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia.

-Jan. 14 at 3 p.m. there will be a Sunday Service at St. Paul AME Church, located at 419 South Ashley Street.

-Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. will be a Youth Showcase displaying local talent and Awards Program at Mathis City Auditorium, 2300 North Ashley Street.
