Storm forces dozens of flight cancellations at Ottawa airport

A man walks down the middle of Agricola Street in Halifax as a major winter storm blasts the Maritimes.

At least a dozen departing flights out of Hancock International Airport have been canceled this morning because of the massive winter storm that slammed the East Coast Thursday.

AirTrain service to JFK has been suspended and replaced by bus service.

In NYC, the rapidly intensifying storm, dubbed a "bomb cyclone", dumped as much as 13 inches.

Airports in New Jersey, Boston, and New York City saw the highest number cancelled flights - those areas are seeing snowfalls of 1-3 inches per hour, ABC News reported.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority invested extensively in equipment to remove snow and keep tracks from freezing after extensive disruptions during the winter of 2015, when Boston got about 9 feet (2.74 meters) of snow.

One woman was not only concerned for her flight, but for her husband who had to drive home.

23 hurt, including firefighter, in Bronx blaze
At least 12 people were injured early on Tuesday after a huge fire tore through an apartment building in NY , reports said. The fire is believed to have started in the Beverly Hills Furniture store on the street level of the four-floor building.

Motorists are also urged to leave their cars at home. "It's not that cold, it'll just be snow".

On Wednesday, states as south as SC and Florida saw some snowfall.

On Wednesday, areas of the US that typically do not get large amounts of snow, such as Florida, Georgia and SC, saw accumulations of up to 5.5 inches. The flight was already delayed three hours.

Storm intensity is measured by central pressure - the lower the pressure, the stronger.

That raised fears that people would be left without power and heat on Friday and during the weekend when temperatures are forecast to drop sharply.

Governor Andrew Cuomo addressed New Yorkers earlier Thursday.

Air Canada, Porter Airlines and WestJet have all issued travel advisories for Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick as well as US destinations Boston and NY.
