Major explosion in Russia's St Petersburg; 10 reported injured

A blast at a supermarket in Saint Petersburg, Russia has left several people injured, according to a report by AFP. The bombing killed 14 people and injured nearly 50.

The blast was caused by a "homemade explosive device with the power equivalent to 200 grams of TNT filled with lethal fragments", she said.

A motive has yet to be determined, and no one has come forward to claim responsibility for the attack.

The Investigative Committee, the nation's top investigative agency, opened a criminal case on the grounds of attempted murder, and confirmed that four people were taken to hospital while six of the injured were treated at the scene.

The shrapnel that was part of the explosive device proved the explosion "was a terror attack anyway".

Putin made the statement during a military decoration ceremony Thursday, mentioning another recent attempt that was prevented by the the Federal Security Bureau.

Storage boxes at all Perekrestok supermarkets in St. Petersburg were removed following the attack. The Kremlin said the suspects had planned to bomb Kazan Cathedral and other crowded sites. Over 50 people have been evacuated from the building.

He has previously said that over 4,000 citizens from Russian Federation and some 5,000 people from other ex-Soviet nations have joined the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.
