South Korea Warns UN Sanctions Won't Keep North From Testing Missiles

Following the vote, US President Donald Trump said the "world wants peace, not death!"

North Korea's Foreign Minister says countries that support imposing new sanctions on his country will "face the consequences". Much of the discussion centered on North Korea.

The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved tough new sanctions against North Korea on Friday in response to its latest launch of a ballistic missile that Pyongyang says can reach anywhere on the USA mainland.

A diplomatic source said Chinese agreement on the tougher sanctions was the result of discussions between the governments of China and the United States.

Pyongyang has slammed the United Nations sanctions as an "act of war".

Intelligence on North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile development programs will also be shared by the militaries and intelligence agencies of the two nations.

Chinese People's Liberation Army's Northern Theater Command has not established a line of communication with USA forces in South Korea, the Global Times newspaper reported Tuesday, citing its sources.

"If the USA wishes to live safely, it must abandon its hostile policy towards the DPRK and learn to co-exist with the country that has nuclear weapons and should wake up from its pipe dream of our country giving up nuclear weapons which we have developed and completed through all kinds of hardships", said the statement, carried by the North's official Korean Central News Agency.

"Today's resolution exemplifies the serious, collective will of the global community that we will continue to put maximum pressure on North Korea until it shows seriousness and takes concrete actions toward the goal of denuclearization", Japanese Ambassador Koro Bessho said in his remarks following the vote.

North Korea's official name is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The ministry issued the projection on Tuesday in a report that assessed North Korea's state of affairs for this year and made forecasts for next year.

"China is a major strategic competitor with the United States, I'm guessing that it probably was not the degree of actual detail of what we would consider in contingency planning that we would need to inform military operations", said Oriana Skylar Mastro, Georgetown University assistant professor of security studies.
