Mauricio Pellegrino resigned to losing defender Virgil van Dijk

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino seems resigned to losing Virgil van Dijk next month.

Salt has been rubbed into their wounds too, given how Claude Puel has got Leicester firing since replacing Craig Shakespeare, after his football was deemed too boring and was subsequently sacked at St. Mary's.

Liverpool were hot on the trail over Van Dijk in the summer, before Saints threatened to report them to the Premier League over an alleged illegal approach for the centre-back.

The Dutchman was so desperate to leave he posted a message on Twitter showing his frustration, yet Southampton held firm in an act of stubbornness. The record is now held by City defender Kyle Walker, who joined in the summer for 52 million pounds.

There are rumours that Manchester City and Chelsea also want him, with the clubs backed by sugar-daddy owners always willing to spend the kind of money that can blow all their rivals away, but Liverpool have to take them on this time and get Van Dijk.

Manager Mauricio Pellegrino said he was fit for selection on Saturday but has made a decision to leave him out once again amid speculation van Dijk wants to leave the St Mary's Stadium in the January transfer window.

Asked why the centre-back was omitted once again, Pellegrino told reporters: "I have to decide what's best for the team and around Virgil there has been a lot of speculation".

'The manager decides what is the best. Around him will be a lot of speculation and we have to wait to see what happens.

'We tried to do the best for the team.

He added: "The club decides which bid they accept, the player decides whether or not he goes to that club".
