A British Woman Has Been Jailed For Bringing 300 Painkillers Into Egypt

Laura Plummer, 33 could face the death sentence if she is found guilty of the charges leveled against her

A BRITISH woman has been jailed for three years for smuggling painkillers into Egypt.

The 33-year-old shopkeeper, Laura Plummer, was arrested on October 9 after police found close to 300 pills of Tramadol packed in her luggage at Egypt's Hurghada International Airport, according to the BBC.

He added: "The evidence is pretty clear that she didn't know the drug was banned and she was taking it out there to help her boyfriend, who has come up with the evidence that he does suffer from a severe back problem".

Plummer has been detained in Egypt since her arrest in October, though her legal team is now debating whether to appeal the decision.

Laura Plummer, left, was sentenced to prison time for smuggling drugs into Egypt that she claimed were for her boyfriend Omar Caboo, at right.

Speaking from Egypt after the verdict, Mum Roberta said: "This is not fair".

Her family have insisted she has been treated fairly by the Egyptian justice system, which will today decide whether to postpone her hearing or accept a bail offer.

Despite Miss Plummer pleading her innocence, prosecutors persuaded a court in Hurghada to send her for trial - and she will appear before a judge at the main criminal court in Safaga.

Her lawyer Mohamed Othman reportedly said a plane ticket showing she paid twice as much for her flights as the drugs were worth is proof that she was not planning to sell them.

North Korea calls latest UN sanctions 'an act of war'
The rogue state has warned that sanctions are hurting the North Korean people, a view echoed by certain American media outlets. UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson declared the sanctions were a "vital step" towards curbing its nuclear weapons program.

"She's a normal, nice person".

Her trial is due to begin tomorrow.

"We're also devastated by the news that it's been able to carry on this far and the fact that she's been sentenced for three years, just for being kind, it's a disgrace".

But her family has been told that she could face up to 25 years in jail or even death penalty.

The family has previously said Plummer had no idea that what she was doing was illegal and she was just "daft".

It is legal in the United Kingdom but a banned drug in Egypt and anyone caught with it can face criminal charges.

The family said a friend gave Ms Plummer the medicine, which was found by customs officials as she arrived for a holiday with her partner on 9 October.

Since October, her family says she has been held in a communal cell with no beds and up to 25 other women. "Laura did not know that what she was carrying was a narcotic".
