Ryanair Pilots Set Recognition Deadline as Strike Threat Lingers

In addition to union recognition, Ryanair pilots are seeking collective bargaining agreements and some changes to contracts. "Everywhere I turned, I could see that people were asking for small things to be done and they just weren't getting done", he was quoted as saying.

He added the union was seeking to fast-track talks on recognition and confirmed that the company was very happy to do this.

"The union reiterated its position that its mandate for strike action can be implemented, after the required notice is given, in the absence of a timely agreement".

Arriving for the meeting, Mr Harbor said they expected the company would confirm its decision to recognise the union for negotiating purposes.

He said the union needed something concrete from management to demonstrate to Ryanair pilots and to the wider public that they really do mean business, and that there has been a real change in the company.

Ryanair said earlier that recognising the unions of pilots and cabin crew will cost them €100m a year.

He described IMPACT as professional negotiators who believe they can make things work better for pilots, passengers, shareholders and management at Ryanair.

Over the weekend, pilots called off a threatened pre-Christmas one-day strike that was planned for tomorrow (December 20th).

"As Ryanair's statement of Friday 15 Dec made clear, Ryanair is moving to recognise unions, starting this week with meetings with Irish, German and Portuguese pilot unions".

But there's still no gurantees - the union IMPACT - representing irish pilots is warning the strike is suspended rather than cancelled.

Last Friday, the airline said it had written to the pilot unions in Ireland, the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal inviting each of them to talks.

Shares in the airline reversed some of its recent losses and were higher in Dublin trade today.
