Facebook improves how blind can 'see' images using AI

Zuckerberg

Facebook is taking more steps to protect users' privacy using its facial recognition technology.

The idea is that from now on, whenever someone uploads a picture of you in it, whether it be your Aunt who doesn't care if you look bad in that group photo or someone from your high school uploading a picture from 20 years ago, you'll know about it.

Facebook is rolling out a new facial recognition feature so you can see photos of you that others have posted, even if they haven't "tagged" your name on them.

The new Photo Review system should reassure Facebook users that there aren't any pictures of them on the social media platform that anyone could see. Plus, this is a measure to stop online impersonations.

"You're in control of your image on Facebook and can make choices such as whether to tag yourself, leave yourself untagged, or reach out to the person who posted the photo if you have concerns about it", Candela added.

There are also other bonuses to this feature such as helping the visually impaired. You can also flag it to Facebook for violation of community standards.

As Christmas approaches, Saturday Night Live is here to help get you in the holiday spirit. Changed the locks on my own office. "And then I threw myself into the bushes".

That said, technology like this can be scary.

The features demonstrate how Facebook is using a trove of facial recognition data, a type of data that has become a key focus for tech titans.

If you feel that way, the feature is optional and reversible.

These new additions expand on how Facebook already uses facial recognition, which is primarily through "tag suggestions" - a feature started in 2010 that suggests which of your friends should be tagged in photos that you upload to the site.

Facebook's database of facial recognition has an impression of users' faces, which it calls a template.

The newest features start rolling out Tuesday, in all markets where facial recognition features are now allowed on Facebook.
