Dreaming Of A White Christmas? Here Are The Odds
Enjoy the last two days of warmth, Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs in the 50s and 60s. This will bring the colder air back to the region.
"While most of the rain missed us today, we see a lot of it coming this week: "as much as 3" to 5" (and in a few spots even more than that) through Friday.
The chances of a white Christmas in the United Kingdom appear to be receding as weather experts forecast that this year could be one of the warmest Christmas days on record. Downpours and thunderstorms are possible through the Deep South, while the rain may turn to slushy wet snow in the mountains of Virginia late in the day.
The last time the United Kingdom experienced a White Christmas was in 2015 when some weather stations saw snowfall, but the last time that snow was reported lying on the ground was 2010. In fact the only year in the past 80 that it hasn't was last year, when there was no snow cover at all on Christmas Eve, and only 3cms on Christmas Day which subsequently melted away. There is no snow in the forecast as of now for either Christmas eve or Christmas day. The front will bring scattered rain showers to Central Illinois during the day on Friday with a chance of a brief rain/snow mix Friday evening. Uncertainty is still high, so we can still easily be sitting around in short sleeves and shorts on Christmas Day. I would think that most folks like the idea of waking up Christmas morning to a white blanket of mood-setting snow. Friday night's low will drop to around 15.
Morning lows still above average
If you're anxious about whether we'll have a white Christmas or not, it seems Thursday will bring that Bing Crosby feeling to the holiday.
Long range outlooks continue to point to better chances of receiving above average precipitation as well which could allow the area to make up some ground on our lack of snowfall early in the season. Areas west of the mountains should be turning dry, but bitter cold air will be blowing in.
Keep updated to the forecast this week, especially those who are expecting to travel.
