Local groups compete to raise money for the Salvation Army

Kettle Campaign $10000 Donation

Some Salvation Army commands around the nation are experimenting with red kettles that have credit card readers to adapt to the changing habits of shoppers.

The owners of a doughnut shop in Maine, Holy Donut, had to publicly apologize for asking The Salvation Army to help them find a family in need this Christmas after they were attacked online earlier this month.

The incident occurred December 5 around 1 p.m.at the Acme on Mantua Avenue in Woodbury.

As of Tuesday, the Brainerd Lakes Salvation Army raised $62,949.60 in holiday-related donations-$120,000 short of its overall Christmas fundraising goal of $190,000.

"The decrease in donations is a concern", said Salvation Army Quad Cities coordinator Major Scott Shelbourn.

Presbyterian Support Otago communications and marketing manager Warren Rosser said even some working-class families' incomes were not enough to sustain them.

Volunteers from each community competed to raise the most money in one day, ringing their bells at the Salvation Armys donation kettles.

The Salvation Army is also distributing 130 hampers of its own alongside the Christmas Hamper Project.

"I really like that we could give people the chance to see that the Salvation Army is really fun, and that it can be really great doing things for the church". "We could not do what we do if it wasn't for those who volunteer their time to ring the bells". And we help entire families build a plan to move toward financial independence through our programs.

"We're hoping that we won't have to cut programming, but it's just, until we sit down and actually revise the budget, we don't know", Wicke said.

"Be creative, play an instrument, play songs, sing songs dress up your pet or your kids", she said. "Your efforts will make Christmas time for many children and families in our community more joyful and happy".
