Nazareth Cancels Christmas in Protest of Trump's Jerusalem Move

NAZARETH’S CHURCH of the Annunciation

Yesterday, palestinians protested by turning off the lights on the Christmas tree outside Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity (it is a shame they didn't protest by cancelling Roger Waters' planned closed-circuit pre-Christmas show).

Nazareth, which Christians consider to be Jesus' birth site, is a major tourist destination and pilgrimage site.

Some Christmas celebrations have been canceled in Nazareth - the Israeli city where the Bible says Jesus grew up - as a protest against President Donald Trump's controversial recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, Reuters reported.

The Brotherly Covenant, an NGO devoted to incorporating Christians into Israeli society, released a statement condemning the move and stated that cancelling Christmas in Nazareth would hinder chances at co-existence.

The giant Basilica of the Annunciation is built on the place where many believe Jesus' mother Mary's house stood and where the angel visited her and told her she would bear the Messiah.

Approximately 69 percent of the Arab town's 76,000 inhabitants are Muslims and 30 percent are Christians.

Mayor Ali Salam - a Muslim - said Trump's decision "has taken away the joy of the holiday", the Times of Israel reported.

Israel has been self-proclaiming Jerusalem as its capital since the Arab Springs of 1967, but neither the Palestinians nor the global community ever recognized the claim - until Trump, that is. "We are part of one single people..." and Trump's comments removed "all the joy" from the holiday period.

According to the group this decision "harms Christians in Israel and in the world on their holy day", the statement read, asserting that it also "harms the city's economy and and relations between the various religions".

A festival and Christmas market are among the events that will not be held.
