Google revealed Matt Lauer and Hurricane Irma were 2017's top searches.

There are few metrics in the world that offer as much insight into our society as Google's annual "Year in Search". Matt Lauer is the former co-host of NBC's "Today" show, who was sacked last month amid allegations of sexual harassment.

The Super Bowl and the Mayweather/McGregor fight landed at four and five, respectively, and the fidget spinners that briefly caught our short attention spans this year hit No. 10.

The website's most searched people included Lauer, Meghan Markle and Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

But many people also searched for answers to the questions, What is a hurricane and What is a bitcoin. The actress announced her engagement to Prince Harry last month.

This year is broken up into 15 categories, and they are as follows: Searches, People, Global News, Actors, Consumer Tech, Elections, Global Sporting Events, How To..., Losses, Memes, Movies, Musicians and Bands, Recipe, Songs/Lyrics, and TV Shows.

To claim this spot, the glass-backed iPhone 8 edged out other popular hardware releases like Apple's own flagship X handset, Nintendo's portable console Switch, Samsung's Galaxy S8 and Microsoft's Xbox One X.
