Same sex marriage bill passes the Senate

Labor Senate leader Penny Wong said the bill's passage was a historic moment

The same-sex marriage bill has passed the senate with 43 votes in favour to 12 against.

As in the United States, the ongoing demonization of Australia's same-sex marriage opponents is driving the effort to pass legislation with no conscience protections.

Debate in the House of Representatives is likely to start on Monday, and a vote is likely before the end of the week.

All proposed amendments, excluding technical tweaks, were voted down with moderate coalition MPs voting with Labor and the Greens to defeat the bulk of attempts by their conservative colleagues to change the bill.

If any amendments are added, the bill will have to return to the Senate for approval before it goes to the Governor-General for Royal Assent.

He told reporters in the capital, "Australians have spoken in their millions and they have voted overwhelmingly yes for marriage equality".

"It says to so many Australians: this parliament and this country accept you for who you are; your love is not lesser and nor are you".

"You are a normal person and, like every other normal person, you have a need to love ..."

Grizzlies Fire David Fizdale
Fizdale was announced as the Grizzlies coach in 2016 and had a 50-51 record in his two seasons at Memphis. The Grizzlies are the second National Basketball Association team to make an in-season coaching change.

There are several possible routes for law change in Australian parliamentary law - but both chambers, the House of Representatives and the Senate, must agree to an identical form. "It says - you are one of us".

"Tori lost his life in the Lindt terrorist siege".

"By passing this bill, we are saying to those vulnerable young people there is nothing wrong with you".

Senator Penny Wong is hugged by co-sponsor Senator Dean Smith earlier this month.

"In the course of a generation, we have seen the LGBTI community move from rejection to tolerance, from tolerance to acceptance, and from acceptance to embrace", he said, according to BuzzFeed.

It also includes a clause where "religious marriage celebrants" are not required to officiate same-sex weddings if it violates tenets of their faith.

The Tasmanian senator said that it should be remembered that religious rights are part of Australia's worldwide obligations, while same sex marriage was not.

Conservatives, including the Nationals MP Andrew Broad, have criticised Turnbull for not doing more to accommodate their demands, but Brandis said the government had decided not to "micro-manage" the process but rather let parliament consider a private member's bill and amendments.
