Merkel invites SPD to enter coalition talks

Martin Schulz chairman of the German Social Democrats wanted to go into opposition

"We are ready to hold talks with the Social Democrats ... in a serious, engaged, honest way and obviously with the intention of success as well", Merkel told reporters after a meeting with her party's leadership in Berlin.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has rejected new elections and wanted to form a new government quickly, as a outcome of the failed government coalition talks with the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens, reports IANS.

Schulz said his party's members would have a final say over any agreement, be it a revival of the grand coalition or a Merkel-led minority government tolerated by the Social Democrats.

However, under pressure from MP's in favor of a deal, Schulz ended his categorical opposition on Friday, announcing that he is willing to engage in talks with the CDU/CSU on forming "any form and any constellation" of government and then put the final decision to party members. "The SPD will not refuse to talk".

Germany's President Frank-Walter Steinmeier last week invited leaders of the CDU, CSU and SPD for a summit this Thursday to break the political deadlock.

Three Coffees a Day Linked to Good Health
Coffee drinking is also linked to a lower risk of Parkinson's disease, depression, and Alzheimer's disease, the study found. So even if scientists found out that drinking it was bad for your health , most coffee-drinkers wouldn't pay any attention.

In a foretaste of the forthcoming wrangling, Seehofer warned that the SPD must not set too many conditions. "Then, Germany can get on with the hard questions" such as Brexit and European Union reforms, which the Grand Coalition "can help resolve".

"The people have voted, and I absolutely do not favour, if we can't do anything with the result, asking people to vote again", Merkel said on Saturday at a party conference of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

However, it appears that leading figures in the CDU and CSU have turned away from the idea of holding new elections.

Acting chancellor Merkel keeping her job at any cost despite her party achieving just 32 per cent of the votes cast may also fly in the face of the desires of the majority of Germans. As the back-and-forth with the SPD gets underway, Merkel, who is scheduled to brief the media later on Monday, made it clear that her coalition partner would have to support a balanced budget and broadly pro-business policies.

However, the SPD is drawing up a lengthy list of demands in return for agreeing to a coalition, according to the Sueddeutsche Zeitung. The party's plans for income tax reform would "relieve lower- and middle-income families" and impose "significantly higher" taxes on large assets.
