London’s Oxford Circus underground station closed as police investigate 'incident'

An altercation between two men was what sparked panic among Christmas shoppers on London's Oxford Street prompting an evacuation of a packed tube station with police finding no evidence of gunfire or casualties.

The Metropolitan Police issued a statement saying they responded to an "incident" at the Oxford Circus station.

Shops on Oxford Street, heaving with shoppers hunting Black Friday deals, either evacuated or went into lockdown.

"Officers working with colleagues from British Transport Police carried out an urgent search of the area".

Armed police were on the scene and are investigating the incident, according to witnesses.

As Buzzfeed reported, The Daily Mail also included a 10-day-old Tweet about a "lorry stopped on the pavement on Oxford Street, police all around it and blood on the floor".

British Transport Police say the incident is believed to have started with an altercation between two men on a platform. "If you sought shelter in a building please now leave, and follow the direction of police officers on the ground if you need assistance", the force said on Twitter.
