Saudi Arabia eases blockade, reopens Yemen's Hudaydah port

The United Nations Security Council on November 9 called for the blockade to be lifted, warning that otherwise Yemen would face "the largest starvation the world has seen for decades".

On Wednesday, the coalition said it would allow humanitarian aid into Yemen through Sana'a airport and the western port of Hodeida.

A UN plane with humanitarian aid workers has arrived this morning in the Yemeni capital, Sana, for the first time since Saudi-led coalition closed all Yemeni ground, air and sea ports, Reuters reported citing the spokesman of the UN World Food Programme (WFP).

"We have not yet had any movement as of now", said Jens Laerke, spokesman of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance.

Egeland, whose group helps 1 million Yemenis, welcomed the coalition announcement as a "step in the right direction", but added: "We only have it in writing now and haven't seen it happen".

The Saudi-led coalition tightened a blockade of the Arab world's poorest country earlier this month, after a missile assault by Shia rebels that targeted the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

Shares in Polyus fell more than 3 percent in early trade in Moscow on Wednesday but then recovered some ground to close down 1.25 percent.

The missile was intercepted near Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, sparking a war of words between Tehran and Riyadh, which accused Iran of "direct aggression" and supplying arms to the Houthis. "But those who are suffering from the blockade had nothing to do with this missile", Egeland told Reuters while in Geneva.

The White House issued a statement saying that the USA welcomes the announcement that Sanaa International Airport was allowing the flow of humanitarian aid to the Yemeni people, adding, "We look forward to additional steps that will facilitate the unfettered flow of humanitarian and commercial goods from all ports of entry to the points of need". The UN said in August that more than 20 million people are at risk from starvation in Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan and the northeast of Nigeria.

United Nations officials have submitted requests to the coalition for deliveries via Hodeidah and Sanaa, and the "hope and expectation" was that the vital aid pipelines would re-open on Friday, the U.N.'s Laerke said.

One flight evacuated five staffers of the International Committee of the Red Cross, according to Soumaya Beltifa of the ICRC in Yemen.

He demanded that they respect a decentralized approach so that the aid is delivered to those who are most in need of it.
