The fire erupted late on November 24 at the 22-storey Leogrand Hotel, where participants in the Miss Georgia 2017 beauty pageant were having dinner.

More than 100 guests and employees were evacuated after the fire, of which the cause remains unknown.

Three Turks and an Israeli were being treated at the Batumi University clinic, spokesman Kakha Chikhradze told Palitra News TV.

Earlier, officials said 12 people had died. "They all are in a stable condition", he added.

The hotel was due to host the Miss Georgia beauty pageant on Sunday.

Local reports suggested the blaze may have begun in the hotel's spa before spreading.

Formal identification of the victims is said to be under way, but an interior ministry statement said one Iranian and 10 Georgians were killed in the blaze.

Georgian Interior Minister Giorgi Gakharia told journalists it was found out there were some violations of fire safety standards at the hotel; in particular, the hotel lacked a fire escape. Sending condolences to the families of those who have died in fire, Kvirikashvili thanked fire-fighters for saving hundreds of others' lives.
