Oscar Pistorius has prison term increased for murder of Reeva Steenkamp

The jail sentence has been extended to 13 years and five months from the previous ruling of six years, according to the BBC.

After the conviction was appealed by the state on the basis that it was "shockingly lenient", it was replaced by a murder charge and Pistorius was sentenced to six years in prison, before the sentence was extended to 13 years and five months on Friday.

Pistorius, a gold medal-winning athlete, is known as the "Blade Runner" for his carbon-fibre prosthetics.

Pistorius was sentenced to five years for culpable homicide in 2014.

He killed Reeva on Valentine's Day in 2013 after shooting four shots through a bathroom door.

"They have sent all their love to the Ings family because they feel that although justice was serviced for Jayde, they know the Ings family will still miss Jayde every day". Pistorius confessed but claimed that he shot her because he thought she was a burglar.

The conviction was later overturned and a murder conviction was set in place in 2015.

Today, South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal sentenced Paralympic running world champion Oscar Pistorius to a total of 15 years in jail following the murder of his girlfriend.

It is unclear whether Pistorius will appeal the latest decision to South Africa's Constitutional Court. He has served a year and five months of his murder sentence.

"I did not expect the Supreme Court of Appeal to hand down such a lengthy sentence of imprisonment", legal analyst Ulrich Roux said on the eNCA news channel.

Pistorius, who turned 31 on Wednesday, is being held at the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre on the outskirts of the South African capital, Pretoria, and did not attend any of the appeal hearings.

Oscar Pistorius reacts in the Pretoria High Court on September 11, 2014, in Pretoria, South Africa.

The judge described Pistorius as a "fallen hero" who will never be at peace and sentenced him to six years in prison.
