Prime Minister Saad Hariri Back In Lebanon After Shock Resignation

Hariri, a Sunni Muslim politician and longtime ally of Saudi Arabia, announced his resignation in a televised speech on November 4, shortly after landing in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

Saad Hariri had unexpectedly resigned as Prime Minister from Saudi Arabia resulting in a political crisis in the region.

The political crisis drew mediation efforts from France, with President Emmanuel Macron inviting Hariri for talks in Paris on Saturday.

Hariri was greeted by members of the security forces as he disembarked from a jet at Beirut airport, live footage of his arrival showed. He told reporters after the meeting that he will arrive in Beirut in time to celebrate Lebanon's Independence Day on Wednesday with the rest of the country.

"I'd like to thank Egypt and President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi for his support of Lebanon and its stability", Al-Hariri said at a short press briefing following his meeting with El-Sisi, where they discussed the need to "distance Lebanon from regional policies".

Hariri expressed fear of assassination and criticized Iran and Hezbollah movement for attempts to destabilize the situation in the Middle East.

"Saad Hariri arrived in Cairo on Tuesday evening from Paris to meet President Sisi, and he is scheduled to return to Lebanon on Wednesday", MENA state news agency said. Sisi and Aoun "underscored the importance of preserving Lebanon's stability as well as upholding Lebanon's national interest".

Egypt's presidency said Aoun, a Hezbollah ally, also spoke with Sisi to discuss developments.
