Tsunami warning for Vanuatu, New Caledonia after massive 7.0 magnitude natural disaster

BREAKING: Massive 7.3 earthquake sparks TSUNAMI warning in Australia

The quake was centered 82 kilometer northeast of Tadine on Mare Island, which has more than 5,600 inhabitants.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has now issued a warning for people in the surrounding areas, including Australia.

An natural disaster of magnitude 7.0 has struck 82km east of the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia, the United States Geological Survey says.

The quake was initially recorded as 6.6 magnitude, but is now being reported as 6.4.

There is a chance that this could trigger hazardous waves within a 300km radius from the epicentre.

By midnight (7pm EST) the PTWC said in a statement the tsunami threat had "largely passed", instructing to follow local authorities' instruction as "minor sea fluctuations may continue over the next few hours".

The agency said waves as high as one meter above the high-tide mark were forecast to hit New Caledonia and smaller waves were expected in Vanuatu.

New Caledonia is part of the "Ring of Fire", a zone of tectonic activity around the Pacific that is subject to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

NZ Civil Defence says there is no tsunami threat.
