Arab League states condemn Hezbollah as 'terrorist organization'

Iran Accuses Saudi Arabia of Pushing for War

The minister said this contrasted with a Saudi meeting with the Arab League in Cairo, during which the kingdom demanded a hard line against Tehran.

"The Lebanese Republic, in spite of our relations with it as a brotherly Arab nation, is under the total control of this terrorist party", Bahrain's Sheikh Ahmed said, referring to Hizbollah.

The House of Saud has been losing ground in the multi-religious Mediterranean state, and the Bahraini foreign minister at the Arab League summit called Lebanon's Hezbollah militia "Iran's longest arm in the region".

Hezbollah is a partner to Lebanon's coalition government.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told an Arab League meeting in Cairo that his country would "not stand handcuffed" in the face of what he called "Iranian aggressions".

Riyadh and Tehran also support opposing sides in several regional conflicts, including in Syria and Yemen. Both have denied any involvement in the incident.

Hizbollah, which was formed by Iran's Revolutionary Guards and still receives financial and militarily assistance from Tehran, fought Israel's occupation of Lebanon in the early 1980s.

Saudi Arabia subsequently expressed its anger at Hezbollah, which maintains close ties with Iran.

The premier, who announced his shock resignation in Riyadh on November 4, has been out of the country for more than two weeks.

"No one can accept, or want, any harm to happen to Lebanon", Abul Gheit said after meeting with Lebanese President Michel Aoun in Baabda.

After French intervention, Hariri flew to France and met French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Saturday.

It's not clear whether Sunday's Arab League meeting will translate into concrete action.

Lebanon was among the countries that voted in favour of the Arab League resolution, except for the points in which Hizbollah was mentioned.

AFP reports that Saudi Arabia requested for Arab League foreign ministers' meeting to discuss "the violations committed by Iran in the Arab region, which undermines security and peace ... around the globe".

While the Arab foreign ministers deliberated in Cairo, Iran's growing power across the region was on display in Syria.

Earlier in the day, Iran's foreign Minister Javad Zarif told state media in Antalya, a Turkish resort city, on the sidelines of a meeting with his Russian and Trukish counterparts, "Unfortunately countries like the Saudi regime are pursuing divisions and creating differences and because of this they don't see any results other than divisions".
