I 'Should Have Left' UCLA Players In Jail Over Father's Comments
The president accused LaVar Ball, the father of one of the players, of being "unaccepting" of Trump's personal intervention in the matter.
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) ripped President Trump on Sunday after the president said he should have left three UCLA basketball players in jail in China for shoplifting. Like I told him, "They try to make a big deal out of nothing sometimes".
The younger Ball, along with fellow freshmen Jalen Hill and Cody Riley, aren't with the rest of the No. 23 Bruins, who are in Kansas City to play in the Hall of Fame Classic on Monday and Tuesday. Trump's Chief of Staff John Kelly told the Times the president was instrumental in their release, bringing it up with China's Xi Jinping.
"Who?" Ball told ESPN when asked about Trump's role in the situation.
However, all three players thanked the president after flying back home. "Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out", LaVar Ball said.
The players returned to the US last week.

Regardless, the letter makes it clear other owners are disturbed with Jones' recent actions. "We urge Mr. In a counterproposal, Goodell's lawyer reportedly asked for $49.05 million per year.
The war of words continued Saturday following Ball's statement to ESPN when Trump's social media director, Dan Scavino, fired back at Ball on his personal Twitter account, saying Ball's son would be in China without the President's assistance.
"Who?" LaVar Ball answered. Trump said in two tweets.
While all three thanked Trump in a press conference after the fact, LaVar Ball's resistance to acknowledge that his son received help led to the Twitter storm.
On Wednesday, UCLA coach Steve Alford announced the players were suspended indefinitely.
The players were arrested and questioned on November 7 about stealing from high-end stores, including sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store next to the team's hotel in Hangzhou, where the Bruins had been staying before leaving for Shanghai to face Georgia Tech. 'I'm happy with how things were handled.
