U.S. varsity players released by China apologize for shoplifting, thank Trump

UCLA basketball players arrested in China are headed home

UCLA basketball player LiAngelo Ball arrives at LAX after flying back from China where he was detained on suspicion of shoplifting, in Los Angeles, California U.S. November 14, 2017.

Three UCLA basketball players who had been detained in China on suspicion of shoplifting admitted on Wednesday that they stole items from three stores, and they thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for his help in winning their release.

Even if Trump did solicit the recognition, Ball and teammates Cody Riley and Jalen Hill all thanked the President for speaking to Chinese President Xi Jingping about their predicament during Trump's recent visit to China.

The case garnered additional attention because LiAngelo Ball is the brother of Los Angeles Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball, and because the timing of the arrests coincided with Trump's visit.

The three African-American players were confined to their hotel as their team went on to defeat Georgia Tech 63 to 60.

President Trump, who is on his way back from a 12-day Asian tour, said he personally intervened with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week about the three players.

Saudi Arabia to reopen Yemen's air and seaports within next 24 hours
Some UNHCR staff have also been affected, with some stranded outside the country and others lacking fuel for transport. More than 2,000 Yemenis have died in a cholera outbreak now affecting almost one million people, AFP reported.

Tuesday evening saw the players making their way through a media scrum after landing at Los Angeles International Airport.

President Trump is hearing crickets from a trio of UCLA basketball players, despite his successful full-court press to get China to drop shoplifting charges against them. You're talking about very long prison sentences.

The players were released on bail last Wednesday and have been staying at hotel in Hangzhou, awaiting a decision from authorities that could range from release to fines to years of detainment. "[The Chinese] do not play games".

"We take seriously any violations of the law", wrote Chancellor Gene Block in an email addressed to the campus community. Neither made any mention of the UCLA players' arrests. He said such proceedings would be confidential.

The whole incident has since overshadowed the Ball family's entry into the Chinese market, as LiAngelo was supposed to accompany outspoken celebrity father LaVar during the store openings of family startup Big Baller Brand.
